The annual 60-day ban on ORV use in Big Cypress National Preserve has ended/NPS
The annual 60-day recreational off-road vehicle closure has ended at Big Cypress National Preserve in Florida. Any units that allow recreational ORV access within the preserve will now be opened.
The preserve's Recreational Off-Road Vehicle Management Plan requires a seasonal 60-day period to allow resources a time free from any pressures related to ORV use. The closure within Big Cypress National Preserve was first implemented in 2002.
For an updated annual ORV permit, visit the ORV Office at the Oasis Visitor Center on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 9 a.m.-noon on a first-come, first-served basis. You may also make an afternoon appointment from 12:30 p.m.-4 p.m. Mondays are available by appointment only. To schedule an appointment, you can call 239-695-1205 or 239-695-1117.
“We appreciate the support from our recreational community in helping to protect the preserve and its resources. Preserve visitors can help by remaining on designated trails, obeying the 15 mph speed limit for wheeled vehicles and 30 mph speed limit for airboats, and practicing good Leave No Trace principles,” said Superintendent Tamara Whittington.
