Shuttered for a month and still without an working water system, Fort Pulaski National Monument in Georgia has reopened after sustaining extensive damage from Hurricane Irma.
The former Army base and Cockspur Island, closed since September 7, has returned to normal operating hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., but there is still a lot of work to be done before Fort Pulaski is fully operational. The Cockspur Island Lighthouse tower and island are closed (including to kayakers and boaters) due to preservation efforts. Most trails on Cockspur Island are open with the exception of the Lighthouse Trail and a portion of the Dike System Trail from Fort Pulaski Road to the Feeder Canal. Observe all posted trail closures and use caution due to widespread damage.
The park’s water system is not operating in the historic area of the park, and the visitor center comfort station is closed. Come prepared with your own water. While the park works to restore the water system and establish a temporary comfort station, portable bathrooms are available near the visitor center. The picnic area restrooms are operational.
