An Indiana man died in a rockfall off the Pīpīwai Trail at Halekala National Park/NPS

A 34-year-old Indiana man traveling off trail in Haleakalā National Park with three friends was killed when he was hit by falling rocks.

Park staff did not identify the victim of Saturday's incident, other than to say he was from Indiana. The four were in an off-trail section of the Kīpahulu District on the southeastern side of the park.

They were in a Pīpīwai stream tributary, about a 15-minute off-trail hike from Waimoku Falls, a park release sent Monday said. The man's friends tried to resuscitate him and called 911 for help. Park rangers and staff from the Maui Fire Department responded, but the victim died at the scene.

The man's body was recovered Sunday morning by Maui Fire Department and Haleakalā National Park rangers.
