A Grand Teton Lodge Co. employee was trampled by horses and three others received various injuries when their horses apparently were spooked by a black bear and her two cubs, park staff said Monday.
The four were training Sunday for trail rides the concessionaire offers when the incident happened near the Colter Bay Corral, said park spokeswoman Denise Germann.
“We do believe it was a black bear and there were two cubs of the year there," she said. "The horses were spooked. They were startled. They knew something was in the area. When they realized it was a bear, the horses turned around and headed back to the corral.”
In the process, the three on horseback fell off, said Ms. German.
“The individual that was walking, the horses trampled right over him," she added.
The four were taken by ambulance to St. Johns Hospital in Jackson, Wyoming. Their injuries were not life-threatening.
