Come to Everglades National Park on Global Big Day to look for a green heron and other feathery species/NPS

Join Everglades National Park Ranger Bob Showler for a Global Big Day Birding Adventure on Oct. 6 from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. in the park. The ranger-led group will look for birds at various points of interest along the Main Park Road between the Royal Palm Visitor Center and Flamingo.

Participants should meet at the Royal Palm Visitor Center and be prepared to drive personal vehicles about 100 miles round-trip. No fuel is available in the park. Participants should bring water, sun and insect protection, lunch, and binoculars if possible. A limited number of loaner binoculars will be available. At certain stops, there will be walking up to a half-mile or more.

Global Big Day, is an event sponsored by the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology’s online birding resource, eBird. Global Big Day answers the question: “How many birds can be seen in one day?”

People around the world observe birds in their own backyards, in parks, or anywhere they wish in an effort to add to the collective global birding day count. On the last Global Big Day in May 2018, over 30,000 birders observed and reported over 7,000 species of birds. This Global Big Day will capture birds during the fall migration. Lists of birds observed on this program will be reported to eBird.

The Royal Palm Visitor Center is located approximately 22 miles southwest from Exit 1 of the Florida Turnpike in Florida City.
