A much-needed rehabilitation of the Scotts Bluff National Monument visitor center is scheduled to get underway in January and run for about nine months. During that time period, a trailer will be set up to handle visitor service and retail operations. The park will not close during the construction and all visitor services will be available to the public.
The monument's original museum building was built in 1935. However, it was soon expanded in 1937 to include the tower, the Landmark Room and a comfort station. The William H. Jackson Memorial Wing was later added in 1948.
The project was originally anticipated to get underway in August 2017, but due to lack of adequate bid proposals, the project was delayed. After receiving numerous bid proposals this year, Rangel Construction Company, LLC, based out of Rapid City, South Dakota, was chosen as the contractor.
Once completed, the newly renovated visitor center will feature all-new interpretive displays, indoor restroom facilities, multi-purpose room and expanded office and retail space. The project will also update the building to meet life safety, accessibility, and building codes while maintaining the historical integrity of the structure.
Scotts Bluff National Monument will continue to be open daily with the exception of Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Park grounds and trails are accessible from sunrise to sunset. A valid park pass is required at all times.

I last visited Scotts Bluff in 2012 and will be visiting again in May 2019. I look forward to seeing the work in progress! It is a wonderful drive up to the top and both trails up top provide great views. I highly recommend visiting!
