Some units of the National Park System are facing greater pressures caused by the partial government shutdown, while others are benefitting from helping hands from states, concessionaires, and non-governmental organizations.
With the shutdown now in its second week, accumulations of human wastes and overflowing garbage cans have forced some parks to close campgrounds, restrooms, and trailheads. Even the Mariposa Grove of Sequoias at Yosemite National Park was closed due to the absence of maintenance crews to deal with the wastes. Some parks that have avoided such problems could encounter them this week as funding support runs out.
Here's a glance at operations in the park system. Please update this list in your comments.
Badlands National Park, South Dakota
* Highway 240 Loop Road and Sage Creek Rim Road was closed Saturday in anticipation of winter weather. The Cedar Pass Road from exit 131 to the park interior, including the Pinnacles Overlook, Big Badlands Overlook, Cliff Shelf and Notch Trail, were to remain open.
Big Bend National Park, Texas
* Staff on Wednesday closed the Chisos Basin, Rio Grande Village, and Cottonwood campgrounds due to sanitation and resource impact concerns. The Santa Elena Canyon Trailhead and trail also was closed due to resource impact concerns. In both instances, the lack of maintenance crews to remove the garbage from overflowing can was creating a sanitation problem as well as being an attractant for the park's black bears.

It makes me wonder how many people are unaware of the closures. If restrooms and garbage pick up is not available the park should be closed. And don't go expecting to find these services. Re: visitors to the National Monument. Is it that hard to find somewhere else to deposit your trash?? Geez people Stop it.
Re: closures in general: blackmail won't work. Find a solution .
Julie, trump has successfully used blackmail and other dirty tricks in his businesses and personal life for nearly 75 years. Why would he change tactics now?
1) Visitors should practice leave no trace behind. Period.
2) It's not about President Trump. It's about illegal immigration and enforcing the laws. The Democrat Congressional leaders all went on vacations after the shutdown while the President cancelled his and stayed in Washington, except for a visit to our troops in Irag. The Democrat Congressional leaders do not care about the American people. They only care about power and sticking it to Trump by not negotiating with him. They supported the building of a "wall" and more border security years ago. So why not now? So walls don't work? Fences don't work? Really? Look around and see how many places have walls and fences to keep out those who shouldn't be there.
3) The money requested by President Trump is a pittance when you look at all the other things in the budget that Democrats - and Republicans - are willing to spend money on that are less important than border security and keeping out illegal aliens who do not choose to enter our country lawfully. For example, Congress is willing to spend $50 billion on foreign aid, or 10 times what is being requested for the border security. Why is foreign aid more important than the security of our country?
It is time for the Democrat Congressional leaders to stop acting like spoiled brats and do what is right for our country. Provide the requested $5 billion for border security and open up our National Parks again. Stop playing politics!
Its pretty disappointing. I would blame the park authorities too, the amount they charge, they dont seem to take care of it at all. Yosemite when I went last time, so many restrooms were closed and lot of them were under maintenance, for how long god knows. Poor management.
No, Kay, it's not poor management.
It's nearly impossible to properly run any place that is being swamped by crowds of visitors without money to pay for what is necessary to keep those restrooms operating and clean.
Don't blame park managers.
Look instead to Congress.
You finally got it right.
Just curious! Can a furloughed NPS employee "volunteer" their time and maybe their personal vehicles along with material items at the park that he or she is employed at. I note where there are a lot of volunteers giving of themselves but I see nothing regarding an employee coming back and giving of themself.
Any comments!
is that campaign slogan really still being tossend around in discourse? That is something 45 owns and this shutdown is a stance to break the spirit's of all the career federal employees. With so many people in an acting capacity and several vacant senior leadership that remain unfilled -- this stance is serving its purpose. The workforce is embattled and this turn of events will continue to pushout those That can't afford to be a pond. We haven't even seen the worst of what's to come. Plan accordingly and stay safe.
