Maswick Lodge on the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park is going to be rebuilt, with the end product offering 30 more rooms than the old lodge in the same space.

The $30 million project, being handled by Xanterra Parks & Resorts, will result in a 120-room complex in four buildings. It is expected to open in the summer of 2020.

According to Xanterra, the new rooms "will greatly improve the guest experience, adding new amenities to the two-story structures including private balconies, elevators, and interior hallway entrances."

The 120 units will be divided among 90 standard rooms and 30 kitchenette units. The project is to be built to LEED Silver standards, with sustainable building materials, high-efficiency lighting, mechanical and plumbing fixtures, use of reclaimed water, and Dark Sky compliant lighting that ensure that the lodges don’t interrupt the stargazing experience at the Grand Canyon.

“This is the first major lodging improvement to take place in decades at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon and we’re underway during the centennial year of Grand Canyon National Park, which makes the investment all the more momentous,” said Mia Bell, general manager of Grand Canyon, South Rim who is overseeing the project. “The buildings served countless visitors for nearly 50 years and the new construction will offer a lodging option that meets the needs of many of our guests. We are proud to be a part of enhancing the national park experience, preparing it for the next 100 years.”

Advance reservations for the new lodging units can be made starting in the Spring of 2020.
