The new foal and his mother/NPS.

In late June, the Assateague Island National Seashore horse "Ms. Macky" (also known as N2BHS-AL) gave birth to a bay pinto colt.

Everything is new to a foal.  N2BHS-ALR will learn how to interact with the environment from his mother and other members of his band.  About two-thirds of foals in the National Seashore are born in April, May, and June, but it is not uncommon for foals to be born during any month of the year.

Encompassing 48,000 acres, Assateague protects both uplands as well as estuary and near-shore habitats. In the 17th century, colonists grazed their horses and livestocks on the islands, and the herd of horses currently surviving within the national seashore are direct descendents of the original domesticated animals.

The new foal and the herd live most of the year in the developed area and campgrounds.  For this reason, the National Park Service expressly reminds visitors that it is essential to remain a minimum of a bus length (40’) away from the wild horses at all times. A mare will be very protective of her new foal and it is vitally important for their well-being that visitors give them, and all of the wild horses, plenty of space.
