A search was underway Saturday deep within Grand Canyon National Park for a missing California man who left his river trip for a day hike.
Park staff said Peter Francis Schwab, 66, of Healdsburg, was last seen on Friday on a river trip near river mile 167 on a small beach downriver from National Canyon. Schwab was reported missing after a day hike to the Narrows in National Canyon. He was last seen wearing a tan, full-brim hat, white long sleeve shirt, gray cargo shorts and older-style Teva shoes/sandals.
Triple-digit high temperatures can be expected within the Inner Gorge of the park at this time of year.
Grand Canyon rangers were searching the area and asking that anyone who may have seen Schwab to contact the NPS ISB Tip Line at 888-653-0009. A missing person investigation is on-going, no further information is available at this time.
Comments
Mr. Schwab is not a hiker. He is a river runner. He floated to the location where he and his group hiked up a side canyon, returned to the river, then he disappeared. The article title should be "Search On For Missing River Runner At Grand Canyon National Park." That will alert river travelers to look for him in the river. Most cordially yours, Tom
