A moist early season storm was bearing down on Glacier National Park in northern Montana with the promise of a rain-snow mix and gusting winds that could create near-blizzard conditions at times this weekend.
The National Weather Service on Thursday issued a winter storm warning for the park from Friday night through the day Sunday. Along with 2-4 inches of snow possible in lower elevations of the park, such as West Glacier, winds could gust above 40 mph at times, the agency said. Higher elevations could see two or more more feet of snow and winds gusting above 55 mph, it added.
In advance of the storm, the park closed the east side of the Going-to-the-Sun Road at the Jackson Glacier Overlook on Thursday, the Many Glacier Campground closed at noon on Thursday, and the Two Medicine Campground was to close Friday morning. While the St. Mary Campground was to remain open, camping there was not being recommended by park staff.
"The National Weather Service advises that we may receive several inches to a couple feet of snow this weekend," the park tweeted out.
