Tropical Storm Karen's approach to the U.S. Virgin Islands led to the suspension of the search for a missing Kentucky woman at Virgin Islands National Park.
Lucy Schuhmann, 48, of Louisville, had been reported missing last week by the owner of an Airbnb in Coral Bay on the southeastern corner of St. John.
On Monday, park SCUBA divers and snorkelers searched the waters off of the south shore of the island. In addition, a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter searched the area.
Weather conditions Tuesday morning were overcast and rainy, and expected to deteriorate as Tropical Storm Karen nears. A tropical storm warning has been issued for the Virgin Islands, and search efforts were being suspended until the storm passes and conditions allow the effort to safely continue.
Heavy rains, flash floods, and mudslides were possible, the National Hurricane Center said.
Anyone with information that they believe may assist in the search are encouraged to call 866-995-8467, option 2. The park will provide regular updates via media releases and social media.
