A wreath will be laid at the base of the Nation's Christmas Tree in Kings Canyon National Park on Sunday/NPS file
For nearly a century, folks have been trekking through the snow to a towering giant sequoia in Kings Canyon National Park to lay down a holiday wreath. This Sunday will mark the 93rd such celebration, which will include jubilation singers and a non-denominational holiday message.
The Nation’s Christmas Tree Ceremony will take place on at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. The free event will be held at the General Grant Tree, a quarter-mile walk from an adjacent parking lot.
The event is sponsored by the Sanger District Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the National Park Service. During the ceremony, Woody Smeck, Sequoia and Kings Canyon superintendent, will speak about the General Grant Tree’s role as a national shrine in memory of the men and women of the Armed Forces who have served, fought, and died to keep America free. A memorial wreath will be placed at the base of the General Grant Tree.
Trekkers are encouraged to arrive early, as parking is limited for this popular event, and should be prepared to walk in snow and slippery conditions. Temperatures are forecast to be in the low 30s during the event, with snow and rain likely. Warm and waterproof clothing and shoes are highly recommended. Tire chains and cables are likely to be required. Everyone driving up for the event is urged to call 559-565-3341 (dial 1, then 1) for current road conditions.
