Reservations for Great Island Cabin Camp cabins are being taken only on January 8 for the coming peak season/NPS

Your opportunity to rent a beachfront cabin at Cape Lookout National Seashore on the Outer Banks of North Carolina arrives January 8, when you can try to reserve one of the Great Island Cabin Camp cabins for the coming summer.

These are rustic, not luxe, accommodations.

Great Island Cabin Camp offers 23 rustic, wooden beachfront cabins with porches for individuals and families or small groups of up to 12 people. Cabins range in size from 288 to 960 sq ft., and Cabin 2 is accessible. All cabins are wired for generator use, needed to power electricity. Guests must provide their own generators, no larger than 6,000 watts or equipped with a GFI. Each cabin contains bunk beds and mattresses, a private bath with sink and shower stall, a hot water heater, a table and chairs. Small kitchens are equipped with cabinets and a propane oven/stove. There are no refrigerators. A grill is just outside each cabin. Bathroom facilities with showers are also centrally located within the camp. Campers must provide their own linens, bedding, cookware, food and food storage, coolers, first-aid supplies and anything else needed during their stay. Most campers also bring flashlights or lanterns. Ice and fuel are available at the camp office. -- recreation.gov

Seashore staff say reservations can be made only on Wednesday, January 8, beginning at 10 a.m. The popular cabin camp will open for business, accommodating visitors with confirmed reservations on Friday,March 13, and operate through the last night of availability on Saturday, November 28.

Rental rates range from $80-$180 depending on the size of the cabin.

Long Point Cabin Camp remains closed due to extensive damages from Hurricane Dorian, which passed by the park on September 6th, 2019.  At present, there is no timeline as to when, or if, it will be able to open in 2020.

Recreation.gov allows for visitors to make reservations online at www.recreation.gov or by calling (877) 444-6777.  The on-line service is available 24-hours a day.  The telephone service is available from 10 a.m. until Midnight (EDT).  Payment with a credit card will be required at the time of the reservation.

Recreation.gov accepts the following major credit cards: Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover.  Please be aware of the cancellation policies and fees (see the reservation policies section of the website).  Recreation.gov allows visitors to create an account at any time, which will allow them to log on and expedite making reservations on January 8, 2020.

Support National Parks Traveler

Your support for the National Parks Traveler comes at a time when news organizations are finding it hard, if not impossible, to stay in business. Traveler's work is vital. For nearly two decades we've provided essential coverage of national parks and protected areas. With the Trump administration’s determination to downsize the federal government, and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum’s approach to public lands focused on energy exploration, it’s clear the Traveler will have much to cover in the months and years ahead. We know of no other news organization that provides such broad coverage of national parks and protected areas on a daily basis. Your support is greatly appreciated.
