Wide-ranging train excursions from Steamtown National Historic Site will acquaint you with travel from the past/NPS

A wide range of daily excursion trips are available this year from Steamtown National Historic Site in Pennesylvania, with steam and diesel locomotives pulling vintage passenger cars across the landscape.

This year's rides vary from short shuttles that explore the park’s historic railroad yard to all-day trips as far as the Delaware Water Gap. The park is working to bring online a new ticketing system that will afford riders more convenience in purchasing tickets. Once that system goes live, details will be provided on the ticket purchasing process. For now, here are the dates for Steamtown NHS train rides and excursions:

Friday-Saturday, April 24-25. The season kicks off with Scranton Limited short train rides that explore the historic former Delaware, Lackawanna and Western (DL&W) Railroad yard that comprises Steamtown NHS. Learn about the history of this important hub of railroad activity. The Scranton Limited will typically be offered on Fridays, Saturdays, and holidays through early November.

The Caboose Experience short ride will be offered on select days throughout the season, including on Saturday and Sunday, April 25-26. Learn about the important role that the lowly caboose played in freight train operations, perhaps gaining a more unique perspective by riding in the caboose cupola.

Sunday, April 26. The season’s first Nay Aug Limited short train ride takes visitors as far as the scenic Nay Aug Gorge, a National Natural Landmark, where Roaring Brook cascades through a forested ravine. The Nay Aug Limited will typically be offered on Sundays through early November.

Support National Parks Traveler

Your support for the National Parks Traveler comes at a time when news organizations are finding it hard, if not impossible, to stay in business. Traveler's work is vital. For nearly two decades we've provided essential coverage of national parks and protected areas. With the Trump administration’s determination to downsize the federal government, and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum’s approach to public lands focused on energy exploration, it’s clear the Traveler will have much to cover in the months and years ahead. We know of no other news organization that provides such broad coverage of national parks and protected areas on a daily basis. Your support is greatly appreciated.
