Dinosaur National Monument in Utah and Colorado was the latest unit of the National Park System to close due to the coronavirus outbreak, while the Brooks River developed area of Katmai National Park and Preserve will not open to the public before July.

Through traffic, but no stopping, will be allowed on Dinosaur National Monument's roads that provide access to county roads, residences, leased lands and public lands managed by other agencies. All other roads and access points will be closed.

“I and the park staff are disappointed that we cannot welcome spring visitors to the park as usual, but it is the necessary thing to do in the interest of public health as we combat the spread of coronavirus," said Superintendent Paul Scolari. "We will see this crisis through together with our surrounding communities in Moffat and Uintah counties, whose support of this closure we appreciate. We look forward to the point when we can welcome visitors back to the park and this incredible part of the American West.”

At Katmai in Alaska, staff said the Brooks Camp Developed Area would not open until 12:01 a.m. local time on July 1. The closure involves all commercial services occurring in the developed area, the Brooks Camp campground, on-site visitor information, and services at Brooks Camp.

In Colorado, staff at Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve announced that the opening of the Piñon Flats Campground would be indefinitely delayed. Previously the park had announced it would open May 1, a month later than usual.

"The basis of the decision to delay the opening of the campground is to promote social distancing and to prevent groups of 10 or more people from forming," a park release said. "The current infrastructure in the campground does not allow the park to meet this guidance and would consequently place visitors and staff at greater risk. Reservations for camp sites scheduled during May will be canceled, and campers will receive a full refund."

On Washington state's Olympic Peninsula, staff at Olympic National Park announced the closure of all coastal areas inside the park. The coastal area closures include all parking areas, trails, beaches, and facilities at Kalaloch, Mora, and Ozette.

Support National Parks Traveler

Your support for the National Parks Traveler comes at a time when news organizations are finding it hard, if not impossible, to stay in business. Traveler's work is vital. For nearly two decades we've provided essential coverage of national parks and protected areas. With the Trump administration’s determination to downsize the federal government, and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum’s approach to public lands focused on energy exploration, it’s clear the Traveler will have much to cover in the months and years ahead. We know of no other news organization that provides such broad coverage of national parks and protected areas on a daily basis. Your support is greatly appreciated.
