Theodore Roosevelt National Park has closed to the public due to the coronavirus pandemic/NPS file

The coronavirus pandemic has claimed another national park, with Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota closed to all recreational use.

“Closing the park was a difficult decision to make during a time when people are seeking recreation and enjoyment in the outdoors," said Superintendent Wendy Ross. "This action will protect the people who work here, live here, visit here, and cherish this place. We look forward to welcoming the public back to their park as we transition to a new normal in the coming months.”

Elsewhere in the park system the following closures have taken effect:

  • All park events and permits have been cancelled until further notice.

Support National Parks Traveler

Your support for the National Parks Traveler comes at a time when news organizations are finding it hard, if not impossible, to stay in business. Traveler's work is vital. For nearly two decades we've provided essential coverage of national parks and protected areas. With the Trump administration’s determination to downsize the federal government, and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum’s approach to public lands focused on energy exploration, it’s clear the Traveler will have much to cover in the months and years ahead. We know of no other news organization that provides such broad coverage of national parks and protected areas on a daily basis. Your support is greatly appreciated.

Comments

Burke County police in North Carolina are ticketing cars at Linville Falls even though there are no signs that say "no parking" or "no trespassing".  Police just wanted to try to enforce the stay at home order even though hiking is allowed under the order. Complete overreach of authority!
