A Maryland man was reported missing in Olympic National Park/NPS HO

Olympic National Park rangers were searching Wednesday for a 21-year-old backpacker from Maryland who was overdue from his trek into the park.

John Solomon was reported missing Tuesday when he failed to check in with his family following his scheduled trip, park staff said Wednesday.

Solomon had a wilderness permit for July 22-26 and was planning on hiking back to the Graves Creek Trailhead via Enchanted Valley, Anderson Pass, Camp Siberia, LaCrosse Pass, Two Bear, and Six Ridge. He had an additional permit beginning July 26 for an overnight trip in the Hoh Rain Forest.

Solomon was described as 6-foot-1 and 150 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. He was wearing a Yellowstone baseball cap and carrying a blue Kelty Backpack. His last known location was the Graves Creek Trailhead in the Quinault Rain Forest.

Rangers located Solomon’s vehicle at the Graves Creek Trailhead. Three hasty search teams made up of park staff and volunteers with Olympic Mountain Rescue headed into the park Wednesday to search the possible routes Solomon could have taken on his itinerary. Additional resources for the search were being coordinated.
