Hurricane Marco and Tropical Storm Laura were bearing down Sunday on units of the National Park System, prompting Dry Tortugas and Everglades national parks, and Gulf Islands National Seashore, to take precautions, including closures.
Everglades and Dry Tortugas were to close to visitors at 5 p.m. local time Sunday, while Gulf Islands closed the Mississippi islands area Saturday evening. The seashore's mainland Davis Bayou area was to close at 3 p.m. Sunday "in anticipation of intense winds, rough seas, and heavy rain that will impact the these areas and are anticipated to cause flooding of roads and coastal areas associated with the named storms."
Day-use areas in the Florida portion of Gulf Islands were to close at 5 p.m. local time Sunday, with a mandatory evacuation of the Fort Pickens campground set for Monday.
"Current predictions are for the park to be affected by the eastern sides of these storms, which typically include strong winds, tides, and flooding. Closed areas include the Fort Pickens Area, Perdido Key Area including Johnson Beach, Opal Beach Area, and Okaloosa Area," a release from the seashore said.
At Everglades and Dry Tortugas, concession-operated boat, ferry, and sea plane tours, as well as services and rentals, also were to close by 5 p.m. Sunday. Marine waters in both parks were to remain open for boating, but emergency services were expected to be extremely limited after 5 p.m., a park release said.
"In Everglades National Park, vessels may seek safe harbor in the area of Ponce De Leon Bay, the Little Shark River between marker 1 and marker 69, and the main tributary of the Shark River. The Flamingo Marina will be closed. Chickees are also closed and vessels are not permitted to tie off to chickees," the release said. "In Dry Tortugas National Park, vessels may seek safe harbor within the one nautical mile anchoring zone around Garden Key, including Bird Key Harbor. Boaters are advised that no services will be available and both Garden and Loggerhead Keys will be closed, including the main dock and visitor courtesy slips on Garden Key."
Elsewhere, all six sites of Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve as well as New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park in Louisisana were to close Sunday at noon local time.
