A weekend swim turned to tragedy for a 23-year-old serviceman who drowned at a lake in Mount Rainier National Park.

The body of Specialist Antonio Scott, who was stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord near Tacoma, Washington, was recovered from the unnamed lake below the Emmons Glacier on Monday, according to park staff. Using sonar and divers, the Pierce County Sheriff’s Dive Team located the victim on its second day of searching.

On Saturday, Scott was swimming in the lake with friends. While crossing the lake he began to struggle, and despite attempts to assist him, he remained underwater and did not resurface, a park release said.

Following the incident, a member of Scott’s party notified a park ranger at the White River Campground, who responded to the location. A hasty team was deployed to begin search efforts. PCSDT and Mountain Rescue Association members assisted in the park’s search on Sunday and at approximately noon on Monday the man's body was located.
