The Arlington Memorial Bridge will be closed to all traffic next week to allow work to continue on the south side of the bridge/NPS file
The National Park Service will close the Arlington Memorial Bridge in Washington, D.C., from 9 p.m. on Friday until 5 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 2. This temporary closure will allow the Park Service to move equipment and repair pavement on the south side of the bridge.
When the bridge reopens on Nov. 2, one lane will be open eastbound and one lane will be open westbound. Pedestrians and bicyclists will use the sidewalk on the north side of the bridge. The Park Service will post signs for pedestrians and bicyclists to follow.
The Park Service is also continuing work to make the roads and trails at Memorial Circle safer. As the agency announced in September, it is repaving, installing new signs and improving crosswalks in and around the circle.
The Arlington Memorial Bridge rehabilitation project is one of the largest construction projects in NPS history. Work began in spring 2018 and is expected to be completed on-time in early 2021.
The bridge, a monument to "the sacrifices and valor of our nation’s military personnel since its dedication in 1932," has long been in dire need of repairs. In 2017 the Federal Highway Administration told the Park Service that, due to the bridge's deterioriating condition, the span would be closed to traffic in 2021 without a full rehabilitation.
