One person is dead, and another in jail charged with first-degree murder following a shooting in a remote area of Death Valley National Park.
Few details were available from the park other than that 34-year-old Zachary Salyer, of Amargosa Valley, Nevada, called Nye County Sheriff’s Office at approximately 7:15 a.m. Sunday "to state he shot the victim. Salyer reported that the victim was on a dry lake bed in Amargosa."
Salyer was arrested by Inyo County Sheriff’s Office, charged with first-degree murder, and transported to Inyo County Jail, according to a park release. He was being held on $1 million bail.
Details of the shooting were not cited in the release, and the victim’s identity was being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The shooting occurred in a rarely-visited section of Death Valley near the community of Amargosa Valley.
