Whiskeytown National Recreation Area fully reopened Saturday after progress was made on the Zogg Fire/NPS
Successful efforts by firefighters to contain the Zogg Fire in California have allowed Whiskeytown National Recreation Area to return to full operations.
The south side of the park was closed Monday due to the fire, and Whiskeytown Lake was closed to all use as aircraft were scooping water from it to dump on the flames.
On Saturday those temporary closures were lifted; at 10 a.m. local time the lake reopened to boating. Also back in business was the south side of the park, including Brandy Creek Beach, marina, and RV campground, the Paige Bar Road-Mule Town Road corridors, and South Shore Drive.
"Thank you for making sacrifices this week," said Whiskeytown Superintendent Josh Hoines. "By visitors cooperating with the temporary closures, firefighters were able to make tremendous progress tackling the Zogg Fire."
While sections of the park reopen from the Zogg Fire, the national recreation area staff reminds visitors to stay vigilant in the ongoing battle against COVID-19. Physical (social) distancing and/or face masks are highly recommended during outdoor recreation. Additionally, visitors should be advised that heavy smoke continues across the area. Finally, visitors to the south side of the park should be aware of downed trees and other potential hazards.
