The popular Festival of Birds at Point Pelee National Park has been cancelled for the second year in a row because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but some programming will be offered online.
From May 1 to 24, the southern Ontario park will share general migration information and deliver virtual presentations from experts that encourage people to birdwatch from their backyards, balconies and neighbourhoods. Follow the park’s Facebook and Twitter accounts for birding tips, facts and images.
For those who live near Point Pelee, the park remains open, but vehicle access, parking and visitor services are significantly reduced. Watch the park’s COVID-19 information page.
Located on major migratory flyways and on the north shore of Lake Erie, Point Pelee is “a migrant trap” that attracts a diversity of species in a very small area. More than 390 species of birds have been recorded.
The Festival of Birds was cancelled in 2020 and usually draws thousands of people.
