Spring road clearing continues in Lassen Volcanic National Park / National Park Service

If you are planning a visit to Lassen Volcanic National Park any time soon, be aware that spring road clearing continues in the southwest area of the park. Although snow level has been less-than-average (snow depth was 68% of average at 9.5 feet), “visitors should still be prepared for oversnow (snowshoe, cross-country) travel in most of the park.”

Cleared sections of the road that are not yet open to vehicles are open to hiking and biking: a 10-mile section of the park highway between Loomis Plaza and Devastated Area, and a 1.5 mile section between Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center and Windy Point (0.5 mile beyond Sulphur Works). Learn more about Hike and Bike the Highway.

The winter entrance fee remains $10 through April 15, returning to $30 through November 30. Entrance is free to all national parks on Saturday, April 17 in celebration of the start of National Park Week. Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center is open Wednesday through Saturday, April 30, then daily beginning May 1. Limited food and supplies are available weekends only between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. No gasoline is available in the park between November and May.

Prepare for your winter visit to Lassen Volcanic by checking the weather, dressing in layers, and carrying food and water. Stow a shovel, blankets, and tire chains in your car and expect winter road conditions. Check the website to find out what is and is not currently open due to weather, construction, or Covid-19.

Support National Parks Traveler

Your support for the National Parks Traveler comes at a time when news organizations are finding it hard, if not impossible, to stay in business. Traveler's work is vital. For nearly two decades we've provided essential coverage of national parks and protected areas. With the Trump administration’s determination to downsize the federal government, and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum’s approach to public lands focused on energy exploration, it’s clear the Traveler will have much to cover in the months and years ahead. We know of no other news organization that provides such broad coverage of national parks and protected areas on a daily basis. Your support is greatly appreciated.
