Why Support National Parks Traveler?

Why should you invest in National Parks Traveler to help ensure it remains online? There are a number of reasons.

News Coverage

The Traveler is the only news organization, for-profit or non-profit, that focuses specifically on national parks and protected areas day in and day out. That coverage often looks at issues that other news organizations overlook or ignore because of staffing limitations. For instance:

  • Traveler in 2019 launched its annual series of "Threatened and Endangered Parks" stories looking at issues straining the National Park System.
  • Traveler has produced a number of special reports on the parks, examining issues such as the threats posed by invasive species, the increasing impacts of wildfires in the park system, how climate change is impacting the Colorado River and parks along its banks, and the maintenance backlog in the park system.
  • Traveler has been out front with coverage of efforts to drill for oil in Big Cypress National Preserve in Florida.
  • Traveler has provided arguably the most comprehensive ongoing coverage of the Caneel Bay Resort and its future at Virgin Islands National Park. A New York Times reporter catching up on the story a year ago sought Traveler's help with part of the story.

Travel Features

Traveler's writers work to bring you travelogues designed to intrigue you to visit the park system and to suggest things to do. For example:

Exploring Canada's Most Accessible Arctic National Park

Sheltering-in Chantey At San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park

Stalking The Carnivorous Plants Of Big Thicket National Preserve

Searching For Glaciers In The National Parks

Call Of The Wild Horses On Sable Island

Irresistible Distractions At Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument

OTBL: Parashant National Monument

A Watery Feast At Big Cypress National Preserve

Photography In The National Parks

Many of us think of ourselves as competent photographers, but there's always something to learn or perfect with our technique. Contributing Photographer Rebecca Latson has amassed an incredible array of columns and features focusing (pun intended) on photo techniques to put to use on your national park adventure. You can find some of her articles here.

Podcasts

For more than 100 consecutive weeks, Traveler has produced podcasts involving various perspectives of the National Park System, from news discussions to travel to science and exploration.

Essays And Opinion Columns

As diverse as the National Park System is, so too are the opinions of those who visit them. As a result, Traveler offers columnists a chance to voice their thoughts on the parks in an effort to air different opinions with hopes of encouraging constructive dialogue. We also present, from time to time, essays on various aspects of the parks, such as species missing from the parks, how generations of park visitors are altering the park experience, and even the value of reviving the Civilian Conservation Corps.

Triva, Quizzes, And Mystery Photos

Those who read the Traveler regularly get a chance to test their park knowledge on quizzes, expand that knowledge with trivia, and see how well they recall park landscapes and facilities through Mystery Photos.

Help Us Expand Coverage To Other Countries' Parks

This year Traveler expanded its regular coverage of national parks and protected areas by moving into Canada. Traveler's long-term vision has always included the need to expand regular coverage to parks beyond the U.S. borders.

Your tax-deductible contributions enable us to bring, and expand, this coverage to you. Help power our non-profit journalism by signing up to give whatever you can each month. If you give $15 or more per month on a recurring monthly basis, we’ll send you some Traveler gear: Either a water bottle, tumbler, or ball cap to show you’re a national parks traveler.

For those who have already signed up, hats and bottles are shipping this week.

Support National Parks Traveler

Your support for the National Parks Traveler comes at a time when news organizations are finding it hard, if not impossible, to stay in business. Traveler's work is vital. For nearly two decades we've provided essential coverage of national parks and protected areas. With the Trump administration’s determination to downsize the federal government, and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum’s approach to public lands focused on energy exploration, it’s clear the Traveler will have much to cover in the months and years ahead. We know of no other news organization that provides such broad coverage of national parks and protected areas on a daily basis. Your support is greatly appreciated.
