The National Park Service has approved improvements to the Oregon Inlet marina at Cape Hatteras National Seashore/NPS file
An aggressive plan to, essentially, rebuild the Oregon Inlet Marina at Cape Hatteras National Seashore on the Outer Banks of North Carolina has been given the go-ahead by the National Park Service.
Under the plan, the 1960s-era buildings will be demolished and replaced with facilities designed to withstand sea level rise and storm surges. New fueling docks also are to be added to the marina that is popular with anglers, and a new wastewater treatment and disposal system will be added, as well.
There also will be improvements to parking, and the marina will be dredged. The marina, located just north of Oregon Inlet, is operated by Oregon Inlet Fishing Center, LLC through a 20-year lease. The lessee will fund and implement most of the construction subject to NPS approval.
“The seashore looks forward to continued collaboration with the marina lessee to develop final plans and specifications and implement the project in the coming months,” said David Hallac, superintendent, National Parks of Eastern North Carolina.
