Outer Banks Park Units Seeing Heavy Visitation

Cape Hatteras National Seashore is a very popular destination this year/NPS file

On the Outer Banks of North Carolina, Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site and Wright Brothers National Memorial through the first six months of the year experienced some of the highest levels of visitation ever recorded at those units.

At Cape Hatteras National Seashore, visitation totals for January-June 2021 were 26 percent higher than the first six months of 2002, the year that currently has the distinction as being the busiest year on record. In actual numbers, Cape Hatteras has seen more than 1.3 million visitors through June this year, Fort Raleigh has welcomed 141,674, and Wright Brothers 222,319.

At Fort Raleigh, the six-month tally of 141,674 represented a 21 percent increase from the same period of 2019. At Wright Brothers National Memorial, the 222,319 count through the first months represented a 22 percent increase.
