Monday's unofficial high temperature at Badwater in Death Valley National Park reached a sizzling 135° Fahrenheit, according to an organization that has been been conducting running events there for decades.
The scorching reading was reported early Monday afternoon by AdventureCORPS, which sponsors the Badwater 135 Ultramarathon World Championship.
"The event has taken place for over 30 years. They get a permit from Death Valley National Park and we work closely with them on safety protocols," said Death Valley spokesperson Abby Wine.
While Furnace Creek in Death Valley holds the world record high temperature of 134° Fahrenheit reported back in July 1913, the reading from Badwater likely won't be recognized as eclipsing it as there is no official weather station in Badwater, the lowest spot in North America at 282 feet below sea level.
"It may be a degree or two hotter at Badwater than at Furnace Creek, but it's hard to know for sure because there isn't an official weather station there," Wines said in an email Monday.
A warning on the park's website urged visitors to prepare for the high heat, with daily temperatures likely to range between 110° Fahrenheit and 120°.
