Editor's note: The National Parks Traveler has operated with only one full-time staffer since its inception, but has a core team of freelance writers, volunteers, photographers, broadcasters, and sound-recording engineers that are relied upon heavily to provide content. They're being introduced to you in a series of short profiles.
Gary Vogt
Gary, who spent a long career with the National Park Service, is based outside the Nisqually Entrance of Mount Rainier National Park in Washington state. He long has volunteered to proofread Traveler’s articles both for grammar and spelling as well as for fact-checking.
Favorite park or “go to” park: It's tough to pick a favorite. Rocky Mountain and Grand Teton were exciting places to learn rock climbing. There was a phase where I trekked almost all the unmaintained trails at Grand Canyon, the Smithsonian of field geology. Olympic is the wildest park I've experienced, with an amazing variety of terrain, flora, and fauna. Mount Rainier has been home and ski hill since retiring from the NPS.
Favorite outdoor activity in the parks: I used to be a professional backpacker, but now can barely walk around the block. Still, hiking, backcountry skiing, photography, and geology remain favorites.
What the Traveler means to you: I've learned so much from Kurt about journalism and the parks since I first tried to pitch him a story years ago. It's been an honor to proofread for the Traveler team and watch it mature into the best source for national park news, features, commentary and comments.
