Barring an unexpected event, the Generals Highway between Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks was set to open Friday for the season. With it open, visitors can quickly travel between the Giant Forest area of Sequoia and the Grant Grove area of Kings Canyon.
This portion of the highway was largely affected by the 2021 KNP Complex Fire, and this is the first time it opens to the public since the fire. Along the highway, some road and trail closures may still be in effect due to impacts from the KNP Complex Fire, the park staff said, adding that some national forest roads might still be closed for winter.
Winter weather is expected on Saturday and tire chains or cables could be required to enter the parks.
The Generals Highway is subject to closure at any time in the event of inclement weather, rock or debris fall, or other hazardous conditions. These risks are heightened by fire impacts along the roadway.
For the most current road conditions, including information about tire chain controls, call the parks’ information line at (559) 565 -3341, press 1, and then press 1 again. Details of what is open and closed can be found online at go.nps.gov/SEKIconditions.
