The Forks National Historic Site in Winnipeg has unveiled its newly reimagined tour, Where Our Stories Meet.
Led by costumed interpreters, the tour transports visitors through various time periods to discover the history of this Manitoba site at the junction of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers. Histories include the experiences of the First Nations who have traded here for thousands of years, the early outsiders to chart this territory for Europe, and the story of the Métis Nation who shaped what would become Manitoba during the era of the fur trade.
The tour was unveiled at the free Doors Open Winnipeg event on May 28 and 29, but regular fees will apply for the rest of the season.
Where Our Stories Meet is offered Wednesday to Sunday at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. in English and 1 p.m. in French until June 30. From July 1 to Sept. 5, the tour runs Friday to Monday at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. (English) and 1 p.m. (French). There are no tours July 16.
Those who’d rather visit the site on their own can download the Parks Canada Guided Tours app and take a self-guided tour through the site at any time — once the Red and Assiniboine rivers have receded and the riverwalk has been cleared for safe use.
Throughout the summer, visitors may spot Parks Canada's interpreters who will be set up in various places around the site. Parks Canada will also be on-site for the upcoming Canada Pride weekend, June 3 to 5, with all-ages activities. Team members will accompany the Parks Canada float through downtown Winnipeg during the Pride Parade on June 5.
Although the Government of Manitoba has lifted all health restrictions related to COVID-19, Parks Canada staff will continue to use masks to ensure the comfort and safety of all visitors.
Electric vehicle charging stations are available at the Forks.
