Jasper National Park will celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day with a day of festivities in Robson Park across the street from the library.
From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on June 21, expect vendors selling traditional food, arts and crafts and local Indigenous history items in the Alberta park townsite. At 1 p.m., there will be a welcome and speeches. At 2 p.m. there will be dancing and drumming.
National Indigenous Peoples Day is a day to recognize and celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. The Canadian Constitution recognizes these three groups as Aboriginal peoples, also known as Indigenous peoples. These three groups share many similarities, but have their own distinct heritage, language, cultural practices and spiritual beliefs.
In cooperation with Indigenous organizations, the federal government chose June 21 — the summer solstice — for National Aboriginal Day, now known as National Indigenous Peoples Day. Many Indigenous peoples and communities have long celebrated their culture and heritage on or near this day due to the significance of the summer solstice as the longest day of the year.
