Parks Canada Parks works with the Atlantic Healthy Oceans Initiative and the Gros-Morne Cooperating Association to help reduce the amount of waste in the Gros Morne National Park region and boost awareness of the impacts of plastic pollution on the environment.
Beach cleanups kicked off June 4 in Glenburnie-Birchy Head-Shoal Brook in western Newfoundland and Labrador. Upcoming beach cleanups for the Plastic Waste-Free Gros Morne partnership include:
• June 8: Trout River
• June 11: Rocky Harbour
• July 9: Cow Head
• Aug. 12: St. Paul’s
• Aug. 20: Woody Point
Other projects to help keep coastlines healthy include:
• Regular beach clean-ups and waste audits in the summer.
• Updates to signage that encourage park visitors to reduce their plastic use.
• Sustainable trip planning. Refill reusable water bottles at one of the water bottle-filling stations in the park.
• Outreach and education initiatives that encourage visitors to adopt proper recycling practices.
• Communications focused on the reduction of plastic use and waste in the Gros Morne region.
