Two Montana men who hoped to climb Dusty Star Mountain in Glacier National Park in Montana died in the attempt, with their bodies spotted Monday morning.
A search for the two 67-year-olds was launched Sunday after they were reported missing. The men, whose names were being withheld pending notification of family, had set out July 21 with a plan to return the next day. After they were reported missing, rangers found their vehicle at the trailhead to the mountain that rises to 8,573 feet above Saint Mary Lake.
An air search began on July 24 in the Dusty Star Mountain area on the east side route of approach where vegetation is extremely dense with potentially dangerous terrain. Two Bear Air flew on July 24 in daylight and darkness. Minuteman Aviation took over Monday morning and located the bodies of the climbers, a park release said.
A plan was underway for recovery of the bodies and the climbers’ belongings.
