Significant amounts of downed timber and mixed timber forest were fueling a wildfire Friday near the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias in Yosemite National Park, where ground crews and aircraft were trying to slow the blaze.
Estimated at 166 acres, the fire was reported to the park's emergency communications center Thursday afternoon by several visitors who spotted smoke coming from the lower Mariposa Grove area near the Washburn Trail. The fire's cause was unknown.
The grove was evacuated and was closed to the public. All areas in Wawona were told to prepare for evacuation.
