Three bills that would designate additional sites to the National Park System were among a batch of measures the House of Representatives passed under a suspension of rules to expedite the legislation.
These particular bills, if they pass the Senate, would designate new sites in the National Park System:
- H.R. 820 (LaHood) New Philadelphia National Historical Site Act, as amended, to establish the New Philadelphia National Historical Park in the State of Illinois as a unit of the National Park System “to preserve, protect, and interpret the archeological resources of the town established by Frank McWorter, a formerly enslaved man, in 1836.” The bill passed by voice vote.
- H.R. 4358 (Buchanan) Little Manatee Wild and Scenic River Act, as amended, to amend the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act to designate segments of the Little Manatee River, a 50-mile segment of river in Florida, as a scenic component of the Wild and Scenic Rivers System, and for other purposes. The bill passed en bloc by a bipartisan vote of 361-69.
- S. 2490 (Cornyn) Blackwell School National Historic Site Act, to establish the Blackwell School National Historic Site in Marfa, Texas, and for other purposes. This Historic Site in Texas will be established as a unit of the National Park System “to preserve, protect, and interpret for the benefit of present and future generations … the role of the Blackwell School as an academic and cultural cornerstone in Marfa, Texas; and the function of the Blackwell School within a segregated system of education in Texas and the United States from the period of 1885 through 1965. The bill passed by a bipartisan vote of 414-12.
