National Park System units in Florida and Georgia were closing Tuesday ahead of Tropical Storm Nicole, which could arrive with hurricane force on Wednesday.
Canaveral National Seashore, Castillo de San Marcos National Monument, Fort Matanzas National Monument, and Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve, including Fort Caroline National Memorial, in Florida and Fort Frederica National Monument and Cumberland Island National Seashore in Georgia had either closed Tuesday or would close Wednesday. The parks also were enforcing a mandatory evacuation from their units.
Canaveral was closing at 6 p.m. local time Tuesday while Castillo de San Marcos, Fort Matanzas, Fort Frederica, Cumberland Island, and Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve, including Fort Caroline National Memorial, all were to close to the public on Wednesday. How long the parks would remain closed depends on impacts from Nicole.
According to the National Hurricane Center, the storm would hit Florida on Wednesday evening and reach Georgia on Thursday. Tuesday afternoon's predictions had Nicole arriving in Florida as a tropical storm, not a hurricane.
