Placing A Value On The National Parks Traveler

Share

Help grow the National Parks Traveler's coverage with a donation on November 29, Giving Tuesday/Rebecca Latson file

Providing information on national parks and protected areas carries a subjective value, which is why it's always great to hear from readers and listeners about the value they place on the National Parks Traveler.

At the Traveler, we strive to report on issues most media overlook, such as the various visitor use management plans being crafted at parks such as Cumberland Island National Seashore, air tour management plans that are spurring controversy, and how rising temperatures at national seashores are skewing the male-female ratio of sea turtle hatchlings. But we also go beyond "national parks" with our coverage, offering you feature stories from places such as Valles Caldera National Preserve, Homestead National Historical Park, Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, and Bandelier National Monument, with more to come.

It's a mix of coverage that many readers and listeners find informative.

When Cindi recently sent a donation to the Traveler, she added a note: "I am grateful for your important coverage of our national parks issues. Keep up the great work!"

Colleen had a similar takeaway after discovering the Traveler's weekly podcasts.

"I just started listening to your podcast this summer and it has quickly become one of the highlights of my week," she wrote in a note accompanying her donation. "I so appreciate the work you do and I hope to be able to keep supporting for years to come!"

Amy, who lives in the U.S. Virgin Islands, turns to the Traveler to help with her own coverage of the issues swirling about Virgin Islands National Park.

"Kurt, I really want to thank you for letting the Virgin Islands Source post your article about Caneel Bay. Your research has deepened my understanding of the situation," she wrote.

Mercy was appreciative of "the podcast and the articles that you guys put out. Keep up the good work!"

Steph, another fan of the Traveler's podcasts, said it is her '"favorite podcast. Thank you for the inspiring and educational information."

Those are just a sampling of the notes we've received over the months. If you appreciate our coverage of parks and protected areas, we hope you'll add your voice and donations to those who support the Traveler's coverage. That support not only moves us closer to landing a $15,000 match from the annual NewsMatch campaign that works to generate charitable support for nonprofit news organizations, but could help the Traveler land additional monetary bonuses.

  • NewsMatch will match up to $1,000 in donations made by a single donor within the campaign period.
  • Any new recurring monthly donation that begins during the campaign period (November 1 to December 31) will be matched at the 12-month value of that donation up to $1,000. For example, a new member that starts a donation of $10/month in December will be matched at $120 ($10 x 12).
  • If the Traveler lands 100 new donors between November 1, 2022, and December 31, 2022, we would land a $1,000 bonus.

This year-end campaign is the biggest of the year for the Traveler, and helps fund our coverage of the special places you value. On Giving Tuesday, we hope you'll keep the Traveler in mind and invest in our work to help you stay informed on national parks and protected areas.

"National Parks Traveler provides trusted, reliable and timely information that ensures the National Parks Conservation Association and park advocates across the country can continue our work to protect our nation’s most iconic and inspirational places for generations to come,” said Theresa Pierno, NPCA's president and CEO.

"In my experience, National Parks Traveler has been an invaluable resource. The articles are informative and timely, incorporating content from multiple points of view. The Traveler also does a tremendous job of compiling and condensing information from sources both within and outside of the NPS. I am thankful to have a reliable news source that helps readers stay informed about actions and events across the National Park System," said Mike Murray, Chair, Coalition to Protect America's National Parks.
