Toronto artist Erika Germain is wrapping up her six-week residency in Nova Scotia’s Cape Breton Highlands National Park as the 2022 Artist in Residence.
Germain began her residency Oct. 1 and will be in Ingonish until Nov. 12. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Vancouver’s Emily Carr University of Art + Design and her Master of Fine Arts from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.
“Her art practice situates an investigation of translation, language and poetry as a means to explore questions around rituals, community, religion and social practice,” Parks Canada said in a news release. “These explorations make use of mediums ranging across painting and writing to ceramics, installations and sculpture, print media, book media and performance.”
It’s the fifth year for the program, which is offered by Parks Canada and the Cape Breton Centre for Craft & Design in Sydney. The residency lets a professional artist focus on developing new projects or work on existing projects within quiet, natural surroundings.
“I’m excited to be able to live and create in the beautiful Cape Breton landscape, exploring through my work themes of community and connection within the welcoming local environment here in Ingonish,” Germain said in a news release.
Lori Burke, executive director of the Cape Breton Centre for Craft & Design, added that “providing exposure to the arts in a rural Cape Breton community is important for all residents.” The “for-impact charitable organization” has more than 300 members and is a leading force in the educational, promotional and economic development of the island’s craft sector.
Parks Canada has offered an artist in residence program at other locations including Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site, Banff National Park, Gros Morne National Park and Terra Nova National Park.
