A lack of snow and projections of above normal temperatures in the long-range forecast have caused the start of this year’s resident snowmobile season in Gros Morne National Park to be delayed until Dec. 16.
Parks Canada will issue a notice when the season opens in the Newfoundland and Labrador park. Resident snowmobile permit holders were supposed to be able to head out on designated corridors Nov. 1 until May 15. The season for public/commercial snowmobile permit holders is slated for Jan. 15 to April 30.
Dates are always subject to change due to factors such as an absence of snow, unfavorable snow conditions, dangerous conditions or impact to ecosystems.
“While snow conditions sometimes remain favourable for riding late into spring, especially in higher elevations, these dates ensure the protection of wildlife and vegetation as seasons change,” the park said in a news release. More information can be found here.
