Parks Canada will groom nearly the entire length of Lachine Canal National Historic Site in the heart of Montreal, a distance of 15 kilometres (9.3 miles) linking the Lachine, LaSalle, Le Sud-Ouest and Ville-Marie boroughs.
Le Sud-Ouest Borough will clear snow on the north side of the path for 2.3 kilometres (1.4 miles) between Atwater Bridge and the Old Port.
For the trail to be groomed, the ground must be frozen, there must be sufficient snow accumulation and the weather forecast must be favourable. Once these conditions are met, snow will be compacted until a 20-centimetre (8-inch) base is in place.
The groomed path and cleared section will let people do things like fat biking, snowshoeing, running and walking. Restrooms will also be available along the winter trail.
