A Wisconsin man who thought he could hike from the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park to the Colorado River far below and back out the same day died in the attempt.
A park release said the unidentified 56-year-old from Pewaukee, Wisconsin, collapsed on the Bright Angel Trail below Havasupai Gardens on February 17 about 3 p.m. The Bright Angel Trail begins on the South Rim just west of Kolb Studio, and descends to the Colorado River. Elevation change from rim to river is 4,460 feet along a 7.8-mile-long trail.
Grand Canyon search-and-rescue personnel arrived on scene at approximately 3:30 p.m. and pronounced the individual deceased.
Park rangers discourage individuals from hiking from the rims to the river and back out the same day because of the strenuous nature of the endeavor as well as the warm, or hot, temperatures.
