A 19-year-old missing in the backcountry of Glacier National Park in Montana since Friday was rescued late Monday when a helicopter crew picked up his heat signal in heavily forested terrain.
Matthew Read, from Dexter, Michigan, had slipped down a snowfield into a drainage on the east side of Huckleberry Mountain and found himself in chest-deep snow. The young man also lost his cellphone, water bottle, and shoes, a park release said. Overnight lows in the park have been dipping below freezing.
Read was working his way down the drainage when he was found about 11 p.m. Monday. A rescuer who was lowered to the teenager found him "somewhat responsive," the release said. Read was hoisted 175 feet into the helicopter and flown out of the park to medical care. He was listed in stable condition Tuesday.
Read was last heard from on Friday afternoon and was thought to started his hike from the Huckleberry Mountain trailhead on the west side of the park around noon that day. After he was reported missing Sunday morning, Read's car was found at the trailhead.
