Needed infrastructure improvements to the Swiftcurrent area of Glacier National Park in Montana has the National Park Service wanting to close the area to the public through 2025 to allow for construction. Located in the northeastern corner of Glacier, the Swiftcurrent area holds the Swiftcurrent Motor Inn, which would be closed during the work.
The public can comment on the proposal through July 30. Under it, the closure would run from fall 2024 until the spring of 2026 to allow for proposed road and parking improvements and a water system replacement.
During the summer of 2025 the public would generally not have access to the Swiftcurrent developed area if the proposal is implemented. Day hiking would be facilitated for the trail system from the Swiftcurrent area. Impacts to visitors would be most noticeable during July and August of 2025, when services typically open to the public would be closed. There would be very little change to the availability of services during the fall and spring shoulder season, since services in the area are normally closed during these times.
