Jumping from cliffs at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in Utah into the cool waters of Lake Powell can be a great activity, if you know exactly what you're jumping into. Is it shallow? Are there submerged objects? There are a number of risky conditions that can arise from jumping into Lake Powell.
On Thursday shortly before noon, an Ohio man never surfaced when he jumped from a spot about 50 feet above the water. On Friday the Utah Department of Public Safety Dive Team used a side scan sonar to locate the body of Cory Ryan Ehrnschwender, 36, of Cincinnati about 30 feet underwater. His body was recovered and transferred to the Utah State Medical Examiner.
Park officials urge people who recreate on or around Lake Powell not to jump or dive off rock cliffs, ledges, or man-made structures (excluding vessels) from a height of 15 feet or more from the surface of the water.
