Parks Canada is investigating a suspected poaching in Jasper National Park in Alberta.

On Oct. 17, 2023, a visitor reported one bighorn sheep ram’s carcass found near Jasper Lake with the head removed. Parks Canada soon discovered a second headless ram’s carcass in the area and closed the area until further notice for public safety.

Parks Canada suspects a poaching offence occurred between 4 p.m. on Oct. 16 and 10 a.m. on Oct. 17. Its Law Enforcement Branch is asking for information that could lead to the identification of those responsible.

Please contact wardens if you have: Dash camera footage from Jasper Lake, Edna’s Knoll or Talbot Lake areas during this time.Information on suspicious persons or vehicles in this area and timeframe.  Any information about suspicious vehicles in the area or any information about two recently-removed bighead ram heads or horns.

Poaching is a serious offence under the Canada National Parks Act. Park Wardens have initiated an investigation and may pursue charges. Anyone with information is asked to call Jasper Dispatch at 780-852-6155 or email [email protected].
