White out conditions like this on the roads are prompting park staff to advise against travel to or within Yellowstone National Park during the current winter storm / NPS - Josh Spice

A significant winter storm in Yellowstone National Park is prompting park staff to advise visitors not to travel to or within the park during the storm which is causing some park roads to close temporarily due to hazardous driving conditions. This is aside from the usual annual closure of most roads in the park on November 1 to prepare them for the winter season and snowmobile and snowcoach travel, which begins December 15. The only park roads open year-round (weather dependent) are between the North Entrance in Gardiner, Montana, and the Northeast Entrance in Cooke City/Silver Gate, Montana (via Mammoth Hot Springs, Tower Junction and Lamar Valley). The park prioritizes keeping these roads open in the winter as conditions allow.

If you are planning a visit to Yellowstone, stay informed about road status:

  • Visit Park Roads
  • Call (307) 344-2117 for recorded information.
  • Receive Yellowstone road alerts on your mobile phone by texting "82190" to 888-777 (an automatic text reply will confirm receipt and provide instructions).
  • Check the weather forecast.

After the storm passes and as conditions improve, park roads and entrances that are temporarily closed will reopen.
