Saturday is a free entrance day across the National Park System, and there are other newsworthy events and things you should be aware of to make the most out of your national park adventures.

Veterans Day Access

The National Park Service will host a variety of special events and provide free entrance to everyone on Saturday to commemorate Veterans Day. On Veterans Day, and throughout the year, U.S. military veterans and Gold Star Family members can obtain a free, lifetime entrance pass to all of the country’s national parks. Current military members and their dependents are eligible for a free annual pass.

There are more than 100 national parks with strong ties to the U.S. military, including battlefields that recall bravery, monuments that stir patriotism, memorials that remember sacrifice, terrain that provided training grounds, and scenic areas that were set aside for relaxation and recreation. Many of them will hold special events on Veterans Day, including:

Fort Stanwix By Candlelight

On Saturday, November 25, the annual Winter on the Carry candlelight event will return to Fort Stanwix National Monument in New York. This special event highlights the winter traditions of 18th century residents of the Mohawk Valley. From 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m., visitors will be invited to explore uniquely decorated rooms inside the fort. A special candlelight evening portion begins at 6:30 p.m. and ends at 8:30 p.m. Both are free of charge.

“Everyone is invited to sing and be merry! This event is unique for winter visitors, who will be able to have amazing opportunities to see the candlelit fort decorated as the soldiers and their families would have remembered from home,” said Ranger Kelly Cardwell. “Bring your family and friends for a relaxing post-Thanksgiving evening!”

Visitors are cautioned to dress for the weather and bring a flashlight, as the fort can be dark and is exposed to the weather. During the evening rooms will be decorated with candles, ivy, and cozy fires. The festivities end at 8:30 p.m., but decorations will be kept on until December 16. Those who are unable to attend the event can view them Tuesday through Saturday between 9:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., weather dependent.

Support National Parks Traveler

Your support for the National Parks Traveler comes at a time when news organizations are finding it hard, if not impossible, to stay in business. Traveler's work is vital. For nearly two decades we've provided essential coverage of national parks and protected areas. With the Trump administration’s determination to downsize the federal government, and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum’s approach to public lands focused on energy exploration, it’s clear the Traveler will have much to cover in the months and years ahead. We know of no other news organization that provides such broad coverage of national parks and protected areas on a daily basis. Your support is greatly appreciated.
