You should be able to reach Zumwalt Meadow near Road's End in Kings Canyon National Park on Monday/NPS file
One of the most beautiful settings in Kings Canyon National Park in California that you can reach by car is expected to reopen Monday.
Cedar Grove lies in a glaciated valley that features towering cliffs, tumbling waterfalls, and the powerful Kings River. Two prominent rock formations, North Dome at 8,717 feet and Grand Sentinel at 8,518 feet, rise 3,500 feet above the canyon floor. Many spectacular wilderness trails originate in the area, especially near Roads End. You reach the area by zig-zagging down the precipitous Kings Canyon Scenic Byway. The area has been closed since flooding during the winter of 2022-23 caused significant damage on the valley floor.
There's a small lodge with a market and food service at Cedar Grove, and some campgrounds on the valley floor.
The reopening is planned to follow a phased timeline:
June 10:
- Day use and wilderness access
- Road's End Permit Station
- Visitor Center (open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., June 10 – Sept. 22)
- Cedar Grove Pack Station
June 15:
Cedar Grove Market
June 21:
Cedar Grove Lodge, Grill, Showers, and Laundry Services
The Sentinel Campground is projected to open no earlier than July 1, as crews address maintenance issues from the storms. Other campgrounds in Cedar Grove are not expected to open this year. Campground reservations will open once a firm opening date is set. Wilderness permit available. A number of walkup permits are available for each trailhead. Wilderness and campground reservations will be available at recreation.gov.
